Five minutes, then stop
How to Make Makeup Last All Day
Skin prep, less product, powder where you crease, spray at the end. More foundation is not more staying power.

Prep is the longevity product
Dehydrated skin makes foundation cling to flakes and then crack. Oily skin makes it slide. You may be both. A light moisturiser, SPF left to set for two minutes, then makeup. Primer is optional and local: silicone on pores, gripping primer on eyelids, nothing on dry cheeks.
Thin layers, cream then powder
Cream blush and bronzer melt into skin and then get locked with a whisper of powder. Powder on top of powder on a dry cheek is how makeup looks dusty at 3 pm. Waterproof mascara if you actually cry or swim; regular if you do not — waterproof is harder to remove and you will wreck lashes raking it off.
- Set eyelids even if you wear no eyeshadow — lids crease.
- Blot, do not add more powder, at lunch.
- Setting spray after powder, not instead of skin prep.
Climate is a formula change
Humidity: less oil, more powder on the T-zone, cream products that are not greasy. Dry heat: skip powder on cheeks, add mist. Transfer onto a mask or a dark jumper is a fabric problem — let makeup set before you dress.
Questions, answered
- Does expensive setting spray work?
- A $12 mist and a $38 mist both help if the base is right. Neither saves four layers of foundation.
- Should I use primer every day?
- Only where a product actually fails. All-over primer is often just silicone on already-slick SPF.
- Why does my chin go patchy?
- Usually dry skin plus too much matte foundation. Exfoliate gently, moisturise, less product.
