How to Layer Necklaces Without Them Tangling
Three lengths, two chain types, one rule: nothing sits on the same vertebra. Tangling is a geometry problem.

The length ladder
Collarbone is roughly 14–16 inches on most adults. 18 sits on the upper sternum. 20 is the start of a pendant drop. If two chains share a length, they will braid. Measure an existing favourite with a sewing tape around your neck, then buy the next one two inches longer, not “a bit longer.”
A pendant counts as its drop, not its chain length. A 16-inch chain with a 30mm pendant is behaving like an 18. Pair it with a 14-inch choker and a 20-inch cable, not another 16.

Chain types that refuse to marry
Two fine cables of the same gauge will always tangle. Pair a box or snake (it has no open links) with a cable. Keep the heaviest chain longest so it hangs as an anchor. Matching metal matters: a plated 16-inch next to a 14k 18-inch will be the one that kinks and greens.
Putting them on without a knot
Fasten the shortest first. Lay each clasp at a different point on the nape — one at centre, one an inch left, one an inch right — so the rings cannot nest. If you always dress in a rush, a layering clasp is worth $20. It is not a substitute for mixed lengths.
When layering is the wrong idea
A black-tie neckline, a funeral, and a job interview all want one chain, not a stack. For a first date, one extra length is enough — see what to wear on a first date. Everyday, two is the default in the gold capsule; three is a decision you make in the mirror, not in a drawer.

- Why do my necklaces tangle in the drawer?
- They travel as a family. Hang them, or give each chain its own zip bag. A single jewelry dish is a knot factory.
- Can I layer gold and silver?
- Yes if you repeat the mix elsewhere (a silver ring, a gold hoop) so it looks decided. One rogue silver chain on an all-gold stack looks like you lost a necklace.
- What if I only own two chains of the same length?
- Add an extender to one of them. Two inches of chain is cheaper than a third necklace and solves the braid.
