Anklet Etiquette: When to Wear One and on Which Ankle

The folklore is loud. The room is louder.

Internet lore assigns left or right ankle to relationship status, sexuality, or “availability.” None of that is a dress code. Wear it on the ankle that does not grind against a driving boot or a bike crank. If a relative has a strong regional opinion, that is family diplomacy, not international protocol.

What does read: a 4 mm charm anklet with bells in a quiet office. A 1.5 mm 14k chain on a beach. A tennis anklet at a funeral. Match the millimetre to the noise level of the room.

Length, metal, and shoes

Measure the ankle at the bone, add 25–40 mm. A 9 inch anklet on a 9.5 inch ankle is a tourniquet when you swell at 6 pm. Extenders of 1 inch ($8–$14) are useful. Charms over 8 mm will hit a shoe; keep daily anklets plain 1.2–2 mm. For water, gold-filled or 14k — and even then, chlorine is still chlorine. A five-minute shower is closer to showering in gold-filled than a two-hour salt swim.

Stacked anklets and when one is enough

Two lengths 10 mm apart can work in the same metal. Three plus a toe ring plus a 40 mm hoop is a festival costume. If you already wear a 2 mm chain at the neck and a 2 mm band, an anklet is a third quiet line, not a new personality. Plate at $18 will green an ankle faster than a finger because shoes and sweat are a closed climate.
