What to Wear on a First Date: Walk, Drinks, or Dinner

Dress for the actual plan. Layers you can peel, shoes you can walk six blocks in, and one spray of scent — not a cloud.

What to Wear on a First Date: Walk, Drinks, or Dinner — still life for this Occasions guide on Nonchallant

The venue is the outfit, not a mood board

Ask what you are actually doing. “Drinks” that turn into a mile walk to a second bar is a different shoe than a booked table at 8pm. A daytime walk in a park wants broken-in leather sneakers, a knit, and trousers with real pockets. A dinner reservation wants a collar or a dress that still looks like clothing in warm indoor light.

If you do not know the plan, dress the middle: dark chinos or a midi, a collared shirt or a fine crew, a jacket you can carry, loafers. That kit also survives a last-minute change of venue. Save the silk slip and the brand-new heel for a date that has an address and a time.

Layers you can take off without a bathroom stall

First dates migrate: cold sidewalk, hot bar, over-air-conditioned dining room. A merino crew ($60–$120) under an unlined jacket is the useful sandwich. A shirt you can unbutton one step. A wrap that stays on the chair instead of a puffer you have to check. If the only way to cool down is a full change, you overdressed.

The layer should still look like an outfit when it comes off. A stained undershirt or a sports bra with a broken strap is not a reveal. Same logic as dressing for a long flight: the mid-layer is the real garment, the shell is optional.

Shoes you can walk six blocks in

Plans slip. The bar is closed, the restaurant is a walk, the night ends at a second place with no Uber in sight. Wear the shoe you have already done a mile in. A 2 inch block heel, a leather loafer, a clean leather sneaker. Not a new sole, not a 4-inch dress sandal with a speared heel, not a flip-flop you cannot take into the room.

Carry a shoulder bag or a jacket pocket, not a tiny clutch that needs a hand all night. If you wear a dress, test sitting, stairs, and a sidewalk grate before you leave the house. Comfort here is not a style lecture; it is how you keep the expression on your face.

Scent, jewelry, and the volume knob

One spray of scent on the chest or the back of the neck, applied 20 minutes before you leave, not in the elevator. If they have to taste your cologne in their drink, you over-applied. Skip it entirely if you are going to a small wine bar or if you know they are scent-sensitive. Deodorant is not optional; more product is.

Jewelry: one chain or one earring stack, not both at full volume. Two necklace lengths is plenty; five is a rattle against a table. Makeup, if you wear it, is the five-minute version — skin, brow, a lip — so a hug does not transfer a full face onto their collar. You are trying to be recognizable at breakfast, not invented for the lighting.

Questions, answered

Is a full suit too much for a first date?
Yes unless the reservation is a jacket-required room. A blazer you can take off is the ceiling for most dinners. A suit with a tie looks like you came from work and forgot to change — or like you are about to meet their parents.
Can I wear sneakers?
Leather sneakers in good shape, with dark trousers, yes for coffee, walks, and many drink bars. Gym shoes with mesh panels and a running sole, no. Dinner in a room with a tablecloth usually wants a leather shoe.
How much jewelry is too much?
If it makes noise on the table or snags a knit, it is too much. One chain, small earrings, a watch. Save the full stack for a night when the point is the outfit.
