What to Wear on a First Date in Summer
Sweat, a walk, outdoor light. Dress for humidity and six unexpected blocks, not for an air-conditioned booth you have not been promised.

Sweat is a fabric problem
Cotton poplin, linen, a merino T in 150 gsm, seersucker. These breathe and then dry. Cheap viscose and polyester polo-shop shirts hold a map of your back. A $40–$90 linen or cotton shirt in a mid color (navy, olive, rust, stripe on white) hides the inevitable better than pale silk.
Undershirts: a merino or cotton crew that is meant to be seen if the shirt comes off, not a stained tank. Deodorant that has dried. One spray of scent, not a cloud that thickens in heat.
- Linen, cotton, merino — not unlined viscose
- A lined midi or shorts that are actually tailored, not gym
- Leather sneaker, loafer, or a sandal with a heel strap
- A light overshirt or merino for the cafe that over-airs
The walk is the plan even when it is not
Summer dates migrate outdoors. Wear the shoe you have already done a mile in. A new sandal strap will blister before the second drink. If the plan is a patio, still assume a sidewalk and a grate.
Outdoor light versus restaurant light
Daylight shows cheap sheen and a full glam face. Keep makeup in the five-minute range if you wear it. A hat only if it stays on at a table. Sunglasses with actual UV400, off when you sit down to talk. If you end up on a rooftop, the wind notes from rooftop bars apply.
Questions, answered
- Are shorts okay on a first date?
- Tailored shorts at a knee or just above, with a real shirt and a real shoe, for a daytime walk. Athletic shorts, no. Dinner usually wants a trouser or a dress.
- Can I wear a white shirt?
- A thick cotton oxford, yes. A thin white viscose, no — heat and light will make it a problem.
- What about perfume in heat?
- Less than winter. One spray, applied early. Heat amplifies it. Skip it at a small outdoor table if you are unsure.
