The formula, not a wardrobe overhaul
Bottoms: cotton chino or a wool-blend trouser with a crease that hangs. Shirt: oxford cloth button-down, or a fine-gauge merino crew. Shoes: leather court sneakers, loafers, or derbies — not running shoes, not flip-flops. Layer: navy sweater. Optional: unstructured blazer.
Buy duplicates. Decision fatigue is the thing you are trying to kill. This is the office version of a capsule, not a fashion week.

What the words on the handbook actually mean
“Business casual” in a startup is jeans-plus-shirt. In a bank it is a blazer. Look at the people two levels above you, not at the intern. Client-facing days add the jacket. Interview days follow the interview guide, one notch above this formula.
If you refuse heels, ties, and dry cleaning
Good. Loafers and a knit polo need a wash bag, not a dry cleaner. A crease in a washable wool-blend trouser is enough structure. Ties are for the rooms that still require them; most do not.

- Are jeans business casual?
- Dark, unripped jeans are casual-Friday in many offices and a mistake in others. Chinos are the safer default.
- Can I wear white sneakers?
- Leather, clean, no mesh, no athletic stripes. Running shoes stay in the gym bag.
- What about dresses?
- A midi with sleeves or a cardigan, in a fabric that does not go sheer at the window. Same shoes as the trouser formula.
