What to Wear to a Baby Shower — still life for this Occasions guide on Nonchallant

The room is someone’s living room or a rented garden

Both mean chairs, cake, and a stack of gifts you may be asked to pass. A midi dress in cotton, linen, or a crepe that does not wrinkle into a map is the default. Pattern is welcome. Sequins are for a night shower that said so on the invite.

Men: chinos, a collared shirt, loafers. A blazer if the invitation used the word “brunch” in a hotel. This is closer to a daytime date than to a wedding.

Colors and the unwritten white rule

You do not have to wear pink or blue. You should not wear a full white column if the parent is in white. Navy, olive, floral, and butter yellow all photograph well with balloons. Gold jewelry, not a statement that fights the cake table — one short necklace is enough.

If you are the pregnant guest, not the host

You still get a comfortable chair. Wear what you can eat in. A wrap or empire-waist dress. Do not buy a “guest of honor” gown unless you are, in fact, the guest of honor.

Questions, answered

Are jeans acceptable?
Dark, neat jeans with a blouse at a backyard shower. Not at a hotel tea.
What about a co-ed barbecue shower?
Smart casual. The same outfit you would wear to a nice weekend lunch.
Do I need a hat?
Only if the invite is garden-party formal. Otherwise you will spend the games holding it.
