What to Wear to a Concert: Symphony, Club, or Festival
Three rooms, three uniforms. Earplugs in every one. Closed shoes in two of them and all three if you have sense.

Symphony, club, and field are not a mood board
A hall with numbered seats wants matte cloth and silence: charcoal or navy tropical wool, a crepe midi, leather oxfords or a 1–2 inch block heel. Sequins catch house lights and then sit in the row in front of you. A standing club wants abrasion resistance and a layer you can wring out in a cab — 12–14 oz denim, a $80–$180 leather jacket, merino or heavy cotton jersey, not viscose that clings once the room hits 80°F.
A festival is weather plus theft plus eight hours on your feet. Pockets that zip. A brim. Sunscreen that does not stain a pale linen you should not have worn anyway.

Earplugs are clothing
Foam from a pharmacy is $8 and better than nothing. Musician’s plugs with a filter ($25–$40, Etymotic and copies) keep the mix and cut the damage. Custom molds are $150–$250 if you do this weekly. Put them in before the support act. A symphony pit is loud enough; a club PA is a workplace hazard with a guest list.
A small zip pouch in a jacket pocket beats a bag on the floor. Phone, cards, plugs, lip balm. If you need a tote to feel dressed, you overpacked.
Closed shoes, or explain your toes to a stranger’s boot
In a standing room, open toes meet other people’s heels, beer, and the monitor cable. A broken-in Chelsea or lace-up boot in leather, $120–$250, is the club shoe. Festival ground is mud by 4pm even when the forecast lied — a white fashion sneaker dies in one set. Symphony floors are kinder; they still punish a stiletto you have not walked in.
If you came from dinner, keep the nicer shoe in a tote only when you have a seat. Standing shows do not have a cloakroom for your second identity.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear jeans to the symphony?
- Dark, clean, unripped jeans with a blazer sometimes pass in a casual hall and still look like you missed the memo. Wear trousers or a midi if the program is Mahler and the seats are numbered.
- Are earplugs overkill for a seated show?
- No. Brass and amplified pops both sit above 90 dB. Foam in a jacket pocket is cheaper than tinnitus.
- What bag works at a standing club?
- A slim crossbody that zips and sits in front of you, or jacket pockets. A backpack becomes a weapon in a pit and a theft target on the floor.
