What to wear
What to Wear to a Graduation When You Are Not the Graduate
You are furniture in someone else’s photographs. Indoor heat is not lawn heat. Do not outdress the gown.

Auditorium versus lawn
Gyms and field houses in May are 78°F with no windows. A black wool suit is a heat injury. Wear 7–9 oz tropical wool, a cotton dress with lining, or chinos and an oxford you can roll. Outdoor ceremonies add sun, wind, and folding chairs that mark the back of a silk slip. Linen and cotton-linen in mid-saturation colors (navy, olive, rust, slate) photograph next to a black gown; pale champagne disappears.
| Setting | Wear | Shoes | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor auditorium / gym | Tropical wool, crepe midi, cotton poplin, blazer off on the chair | Loafer, oxford, 1–2 in block heel | Heavy flannel, sequins, a ballgown |
| Lawn / stadium | Linen-blend, cotton, unstructured jacket | Block heel, loafer, wedge — not a stiletto | White column, new suede, a hat that flies |
| Dinner after | The ceremony kit plus one sharper layer | Same shoes if they still work | A full change nobody asked for |
You are not the graduate
Family in matching custom T-shirts photograph as a brand activation. A quiet outfit in the graduate’s colors as a pocket square or a small accessory is enough. Do not wear a cap and gown unless you earned one this cycle. White is not banned the way it is at a wedding, but a cream suit next to a white dress under the gown still looks like you wanted a column.
Parents often overdress one notch. Grandparents can wear the church suit. Siblings in clubwear become the photo people crop.
Hours of sitting, then grass
You will sit, stand, clap, sit, then walk a lawn for pictures. Stretch in the waist. A $60–$140 cotton-poplin shirt that breathes beats a $40 viscose blouse that spots. Men: skip the tie if the room is a gym and the graduate is in shorts under the gown; wear the tie if the school is a chapel service.
A small bag with water, tissues, and a portable battery. The stadium tote with the graduate’s face on it is optional and loud.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear jeans?
- Dark, unripped jeans at a stadium in July, with a collared shirt, sometimes. Not in a chapel or a private-school auditorium.
- Are sandals acceptable outdoors?
- A leather sandal with a back strap on packed grass, if the rest is finished. Flip-flops next to a gown look like you came from the car wash.
- Should family match?
- Same color family, not matching outfits. Navy and white as a palette is enough. Custom shirts are for the after-party parking lot, if then.
