What to Wear to a Housewarming
Useful, not fancy. You may sit on the floor. You may carry a plant. Dress like a person who can help open a box.

You are in someone’s unfinished rooms
There may be no sofa. There may be packing paper. Wear clothes that can sit on a floor and still look like clothes in a photo in the kitchen. Dark jeans without rips, chinos, a cotton dress that is not dry-clean-only white. A $80 merino or a $50 oxford.
- Shoes you can remove — socks you would show a stranger
- Pockets for keys and a phone; a plant occupies a hand
- A layer; new apartments are often cold or over-aired
- Nothing that snags on unpacked furniture
The gift is part of the silhouette
A potted plant, a bottle, a wrapped pan — you will carry it up stairs. Wear a bag with a shoulder strap or keep a hand free. Do not bring a scented candle the size of a brick unless they asked. Do not bring a full outfit that needs both hands to hold a hem.
When the housewarming is actually a party
If they hired a bartender and printed cocktail on the invite, bump up: a midi, a jacket, a leather shoe. If it is chips and a speaker, stay in the weekend kit. Ask what they are wearing. Matching the hosts, not outdressing them, is the entire job.

- If you came from work, take off the tie and the lanyard. Showing up in a full suit to a box-filled apartment looks like you are there to inspect the lease.

- Slip-off loafers or sneakers and decent socks. Do not arrive in boots that take three minutes and a chair.
