Best Everyday Sneakers Under $120 — still life for this Smart buying guide on Nonchallant

What $120 can and cannot do

It can buy calf or good split-free leather on a cupsole, or heavy canvas on a vulcanized foxing. It cannot buy full-grain calf from a small last-maker with a recraftable welt. Do not try to make a $110 pair into an heirloom. Two pairs in rotation last longer than one pair worn wet every day.

A short, honest list of shapes

White leather tennis: office-adjacent, crease they will, tree them. Low canvas: weekend, washable. Retro runner in this budget is often EVA that packs out in four months — fine if you like the look and will replace it. Dark gum-sole leather: hides dirt, still a sneaker.

Fit and colour beat a logo in this band

A slightly roomy toe creases less than a tight fashion last. Off-white and gum hide more than optical white. Black leather cupsole is the pair that survives rain better than white canvas. Replace insoles at month six before you replace the shoe.

Questions, answered

Are Stan Smiths leather enough?
They are a real, cheap calf-or-leather-class court shoe at the price. They crease. They are not full-grain boot leather. For $100 they are honest.
Can I recraft a $110 cupsole?
Sometimes a cobbler will glue a new top lift or insole. Plan to replace the pair. Recraft money belongs on welted shoes.
White sneakers with dark jeans?
Yes if the leather is simple and clean. Canvas reads more weekend. Neither replaces a leather derby for a funeral.
