The legal-ish brightness band
Category 2–3 is the daytime driving band in most places. Category 4 (glacier dark) is not for driving. Category 0–1 is a fashion tint. Photochromics often stay too light behind a windshield — they need UV to go dark.
Grey keeps brake lights honest. Brown and G-15 green bump contrast and shift colour a little. Blue-mirror fashion tints can muddy reds. If you drive for work, grey.
Polarization on the road
Wet tarmac, low sun, bonnet glare: polarization helps. Some LCDs and HUDs rainbow or black out — the same physics as a phone. Try before a long trip. Keep a non-polarized UV400 spare if your car is fussy.

What not to wear in the car
Night yellow. Aftermarket ‘blue blocker’ amber as a day lens if you need true traffic colour. Unrated dark gas-station pairs. Gradient-only if the road is bright at the bottom of the view. Prescription drivers: an Rx sun pair or a proper clip, not readers perched under a fashion sun.

- Is polarization required for driving?
- No. UV400 and a dark enough tint are the base. Polarization is extra comfort on glare days.
- Can I drive in photochromics?
- You can. They may not go dark enough. Keep a dedicated pair in the car.
- What about rain?
- Polarization can help with wet-road glare. It will not help you see through a dirty windscreen. Clean the glass.
