A long face wants height in the lens, not another vertical line. Oversized rectangles and bold wayfarers beat skinny ovals.

Length is the thing you are managing
Oblong is oval stretched. Forehead, cheeks, and jaw similar in width; the face is clearly longer than it is wide. A short lens adds empty forehead and empty chin. A tall lens crops the length.
Measure brow to chin. If the frame covers less than a third of that distance, it is too short. You want the top of the frame on the brow and the bottom near the top of the cheek.
Shapes that add width and height
A thick-rim wayfarer, a square acetate with 42mm+ lens height, and a clubmaster with a real brow bar all help. Classic teardrop aviators are already tall, which is useful, but a skinny metal aviator on a long face becomes two vertical commas.
- Buy: oversized wayfarer, tall rectangle, browline, thick acetate
- Skip: narrow ovals, thin metal slits, tiny fashion rectangles
- Decorative temples can add horizontal width if the face is also narrow
Fit numbers that actually matter
Lens height 40–48mm. Total frame width matching the cheek or 2–4mm over. Bridge that does not sit so high the pair becomes a forehead accessory. $50–$140 for UV400 acetate is enough. Polarize if you drive.

- Is oblong the same as oval?
- Oval is balanced. Oblong is the long version. If people keep telling you to try a bigger frame, you are probably oblong.
- Can I wear round lenses?
- Large rounds, yes. Small rounds lengthen the face. Size is doing more work than shape here.
- What about a beard?
- A beard shortens the lower third. You can then wear a slightly shorter lens than a clean-shaven oblong face.
