Lenses, not just frames

Bifocal vs Progressive Lenses: The Honest Split

A bifocal is two prescriptions with a line. A progressive is many prescriptions with a learning curve. Neither is a personality.

Bifocal vs Progressive Lenses: The Honest Split — still life for this Eyewear guide on Nonchallant

Two tools, not an upgrade path

A bifocal is a distance lens with a visible near segment, usually a D-segment at the bottom. You look out, or you look down. There is no honest mid-range. Adaptation is fast because the jump is obvious.

A progressive adds a corridor of changing power between far and near. You get computer distance without a second pair — if the corridor is wide enough and the fit is measured, not guessed. The sides of the lens swim. That swim is physics, not your failure.

Why cheap progressives give progressives a bad name

A narrow corridor means you have to aim your nose at the spreadsheet. A mis-measured pupillary distance or fitting height means the near zone is in your cheek. Give a well-fit lens two weeks of all-day wear before you declare failure. Give a $99 special about three days and then go back.

Occupational / computer progressives exist if your life is a monitor. They are not the same lens as an all-purpose progressive. Ask. The fitting notes in how to choose progressives are the difference between a lens and a paperweight.

Coatings, then the frame

Anti-reflective is worth it on progressives because you look through more zones and more angles; see AR coating. Photochromic is a separate choice. Polarized sun progressives exist and cost more; they are excellent for driving if the fit is already right in your clear pair.

A too-small frame kills the corridor. Progressives need enough vertical lens to put distance, mid, and near somewhere. A tiny fashion round is a bifocal candidate or a single-vision candidate, not a cheap progressive candidate.

Questions, answered

How long until progressives feel normal?
Most people have the worst of it in three to five days and are useful at two weeks. If you only wear them at the computer on Tuesdays, you will never adapt.
Can I have bifocals in sun and progressives in clear?
Yes. Some people prefer a lined bifocal in sunglasses because the segment is obvious in glare. Consistency is easier. Mixed is allowed.
Are office / computer lenses the same as progressives?
No. They trade distance for a wider mid-range. You will still want a driving pair. Tell the optician how many hours you stare at 70cm.
