Dark brown is the colour, not “any brown”

Hold the shoe next to the jacket in daylight. If the leather looks caramel or ginger, it is tan — save it for cotton and summer weddings. If it reads as dark chocolate, it is the weekday brown. Burnished toes that fade to tan at the cap can still work if the body of the shoe is dark. Oxblood is a third palette: it likes navy, it wants a burgundy or dark-brown belt, and it is not black.

Tie, watch, and the rest of the brown family

A navy suit, brown shoes, and a navy grenadine is one system. Add a brown belt and a 36–40 mm watch on brown leather or steel — not a bright gold bracelet unless the buckle is gilt too. Pocket square: white linen, not a brown print that “matches” the shoes. Trouser hem: slight break on the vamp so you see the leather. A no-break crop that flashes a novelty sock will steal the work the brown shoe is doing. Polish brown with brown cream; a layer of black dye to “make them formal” is how you ruin a pair.
