When to Wear a Button-Down Collar (and When It Looks Lost)
The OCBD is a sport-collar that learned to work. Button it with a blazer, chinos, and a four-in-hand. Leave it unbuttoned at the neck on Friday. Do not put it under black tie.

The roll is the whole collar
A proper button-down has a soft unlined or lightly lined point that rolls from the band down to a button 3–3.5 cm from the point. That arc, 7–8 cm of cloth in the air, is the Ivy tell. A fused, flat button-down that sits like a point collar with two extra buttons is a dress shirt that got confused. Oxford cloth (a basket weave you can see) is the default. Broadcloth button-downs exist; they read dressier and lose the roll.
Buttons stay buttoned when a tie is on. Open the top shirt button, keep the collar buttons in, for no-tie Friday. Unbuttoning the collar buttons is a 1990s leftover. Pair with a navy blazer or a hopsack sport coat, not a peak-lapel tuxedo.
Tie, no tie, and the suit test
No tie: the OCBD is at home. Knit tie, four-in-hand, no dimple required on the knit: also at home. Woven silk four-in-hand: acceptable with a blazer. Half-Windsor on an OCBD: usually too much knot for the soft gap. A navy two-piece in Super 110s with an OCBD is an American business-casual hybrid. It fails in court, at a funeral, and in any office that still means “suit” when it says suit. For the weekday office formula it is often the right shirt.

Fit notes the shop will skip
Collar band as measured, not “M.” A 41 cm neck in a 39 cm OCBD will pop the collar button. Sleeve shows 1–1.5 cm of cuff under a jacket, or sits at the wrist bone without one. Oxford cloth is 4–5 oz; it will wrinkle. That is the cloth. A wrinkle-free coating is a plastic hand. White and light blue first; a university stripe third. Pink gingham is a choice you make after the first two exist.
