Five minutes, then stop
Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen
Mineral sits on top and looks like it. Chemical absorbs into the film and usually wears under makeup. Both work at the labelled SPF if you apply enough.

Two ways to stop the same light
Mineral filters scatter and absorb. Chemical filters absorb and convert. Hybrid bottles exist and are often the least annoying to wear. The US filter list is shorter than Europe’s; a European chemical SPF 50 may feel nicer and still be a real 50 if you put on 2mg/cm².
Cast: zinc on deep skin tones is a known problem. Tinted mineral is the workaround. Chemical on very reactive skin is a known problem. Patch a new bottle on the jaw for two mornings.
Makeup, sport, and the rest
Under foundation, chemical or hybrid usually pills less. At the beach, a water-resistant 50 in either family, two fingers, reapply at 2 hours if you swim. Mineral is not ‘waterproof magic’; sweat still moves it.
| Mineral | Chemical | |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Often white/grey unless tinted | Usually clearer |
| Wait before sun | Works when it is on | Often 10–20 minutes |
| Under makeup | Can pill or look dry | Usually easier |
| Sensitive / ‘I want fewer filters’ | Often first try | Patch test |
The amount still wins
People argue type and then apply 0.3ml to a face that wanted ~1.2ml. Two-finger rule for face and neck. $12–$38 for a daily 50ml. Expiry still applies — dates are real.
Questions, answered
- Is mineral safer?
- Both are regulated as sunscreens. Mineral is a preference for some skins and some philosophies. It is not a moral upgrade if you under-apply it.
- Can I mix a drop of moisturizer to kill the cast?
- You dilute the SPF. Buy tinted mineral instead.
- Which for a five-minute face?
- Tinted chemical or hybrid SPF as the base — the five-minute routine already assumes that.
