Chinos Colour Order to Buy: Navy, Stone, Olive, Then Stop
Navy first, stone second, olive third. Yellow khaki is optional. White is a summer extra. Five khakis is a laundry pile, not a wardrobe.

The order is utility, not taste
Navy: the weekday chino. Dark enough for a messy lunch, distinct enough from jeans at two metres if the twill is clear. Stone: the light pair that is not a stained yellow. Olive: the third colour that still likes brown leather. That sequence fills a capsule without a khaki explosion. Yellow-green mall khaki photographs dirty at the thigh. If you love khaki, make it the fourth pair in a cooler shade, and do not buy three of them on sale.
Cloth and crease rules live with chinos versus dress pants. This page is only colour order so you stop buying the same sand five times.
What each colour actually pairs with
Navy chinos: white or light-blue oxford, grey or cream knit, brown belt and shoes, white leather sneakers, navy knit that does not match the pant exactly. Stone: navy or white shirt, navy blazer, mid-brown shoes, not black cap-toes. Olive: cream, white, light blue, rust knit, brown leather. Black cotton trousers are not chinos in spirit; they read as chef unless the cut is very sharp. Charcoal cotton is closer to a casual grey trouser.
| Buy order | Colour | Why it is in that slot |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Navy | Hides wear, works with brown and white shoes |
| 2 | Stone / cool sand | Light pair that is not yellow khaki |
| 3 | Olive | Third colour, still with brown leather |
| 4 optional | Grey cotton or true khaki | Only after 1–3 exist |
| Skip as first | White, pastels, black cotton | Stains, costume, or chef |
Cut, hem, and when to buy wool instead
Same cut in all three colours so they feel like a uniform. Mid rise, slight break, no pieced “fashion” knee. If your office still wants a crease that lasts past 11 am, the next pair is grey wool, not a fourth chino — that fork is grey trousers versus khaki. $60–120 per pair in cotton that is not shiny. Below $40 the twill often bags by lunch. Wash cold, hang; a hot dryer fades navy to sad and sets a crooked crease.
Questions, answered
- Why not khaki first? That is the chino colour.
- American mall khaki is a yellow that stains and photographs poorly. Stone does the light-pant job with less shame. If your khaki is actually a cool stone, you already bought pair two.
- Can navy chinos go with a navy blazer?
- Yes, if the cloths disagree — cotton twill versus wool hopsack. Matching navy-on-navy in the same value looks like a cheap suit.
- How many is enough?
- Three good pairs rotate through a work week with one wool trouser. Six chinos in one colour is storage.
