Dark Navy vs Charcoal Suit: Which Colour Does More Work

What each colour is for

Navy: the versatile worsted. It takes brown or black shoes, a grenadine or a knit, a white or light-blue shirt. It does a daytime wedding without looking like staff. Charcoal: the serious grey. It takes black shoes more easily than tan. It photographs as authority. It is better in a grey-carpet office and at a funeral than navy, though navy will do. Black remains a third colour for evening staff and actual mourning rooms that specified it.

The first-suit brief in how to buy your first suit is navy for a reason. Do not let a salesman talk you into charcoal because it is “more professional” if you will wear the thing to mixed events.

Shoes, shirts, and the photograph

Navy + dark brown cap-toe or derby is the modern default. Navy + black is the conservative default. Charcoal + black is classic. Charcoal + dark brown is allowed and slightly softer. Tan shoes with charcoal is a stretch; tan with navy is easier. Shirts: white pops on charcoal, light blue sits on navy. Avoid a navy suit so dark the camera makes it black next to a white shirt — stand at a window. You should still see blue.

Cloth weight and the second suit

Both colours in 270–310 g Super 110s–120s will do three seasons. A 4 cm difference in lapel width will show more than a 5% difference in grey versus blue. Keep both suits in a 7.5–9 cm notch, two-button, until you know you want a peak. Second suit: the other colour, not a check, not a double-breasted, not a 240 g summer cloth you cannot wear in January. A 36–40 mm watch with a dark strap sits on both; a bright steel dive at 44 mm fights charcoal more than navy.
