Five minutes, then stop
Is Double Cleansing Worth It?
Worth it on waterproof mascara, festival SPF, and stage makeup. Not worth it as a 10-minute religion on a bare Tuesday.

Oil first is the actual method
An oil, balm, or cleansing balm on dry skin, 30–60 seconds, emulsify with a little water, rinse or wipe. Then a mild gel or cream cleanser. That is the Korean-salon logic applied to a city SPF, and it works.
Micellar first can stand in for the oil step on a travel night. It is not better than oil on waterproof mascara.
When a single cleanse is the grown-up choice
Bare face, light SPF, winter, retinoid already running. A single cream cleanser, 45 seconds. If your second cleanse is a squeaky charcoal foam, you are paying in tightness.
- Yes: waterproof, mineral SPF that stains, pigmented base
- Optional: everyday chemical SPF
- No: two foams, or a 4-step cleanse with a brush
Time and skin both have a budget
If double cleansing means you skip moisturizer because you are late, skip the second cleanse instead. A 90-second oil-plus-gel on heavy days and a 40-second single on light days is a routine you will still be doing in March. $8–$22 for a balm; you do not need a $48 oil.
Questions, answered
- Will an oil cleanser clog pores?
- A well-emulsifying cleansing oil rinsed well usually does not. If you break out along the jaw, try a different ester or a shorter first step.
- Can I double cleanse in the morning?
- Almost never useful. Save it for the night you earned it.
- Is cleansing balm the same as makeup remover?
- Same family. Dedicated eye remover is still kinder on waterproof liner.
