Double Monk vs Single Monk Straps: Which One First

A single monk is a derby with a buckle. A double monk is a statement that can look like 2014 if the strap is a billboard. Start with the single in dark brown.

Double Monk vs Single Monk Straps: Which One First — still life for this Menswear guide on Nonchallant

One buckle is the wearable one

A single monk is open-laced in spirit: the strap crosses the instep once, the buckle sits on the outside, the toe can be plain or a light almond. It reads as a derby with better manners. Dark brown calf, Goodyear or a good Blake, leather sole with a rubber heel, $200–$350. That pair will do more days than a double.

A double monk adds a second strap. The extra hardware is the point and the problem. In 2013 it was the shoe of every lookbook. In a quiet office it can still look like you bought a trend. Keep the straps short, the buckles small, the leather dark. A double in oxblood with racing stripes is costume.

With what trousers

Single monk: navy or charcoal trousers, chinos, dark jeans with a break. No white athletic sock. A dark trouser sock or a no-show only with cropped trousers you already wear that way.

Double monk: same, plus the risk of the buckles catching a cuff. A slightly shorter break helps. Do not pair either monk with a tuxedo. That is still patent or a very quiet oxford, and even then only if the invitation is confused.

Belt, hardware, and the rest of the leather

Match the belt leather to the shoe, not the buckle to the monk buckle unless they are both simple and small. See belt and shoes. A braided belt with a double monk is two textures arguing.

If you only own one pair of leather shoes, do not make it a double monk. Make it a dark-brown derby, then a monk. The order is in which shoe to buy first.

Questions, answered

Are double monks out of style?
The loud ones are. A dark, short-strap double in a round last is still a shoe. It is just not the first shoe.
Can I wear monks with a suit?
A single monk with a navy or charcoal suit in a creative office, yes. A conservative interview, no — wear the cap-toe oxford.
Silver buckle or brass?
Match the rest of your hardware that day, loosely. Brushed nickel is quieter than bright brass. Do not mix a gold watch, a silver monk buckle, and a bronze belt in one outfit on purpose.
