When to Wear a Flannel Suit: Weight, Season, and Crease
Flannel is a brushed wool, 320–400 g, for cold months. Grey odd trousers do more work than a matching flannel suit. Do not wear it in July.

The nap is the cloth
Worsted is smooth. Flannel is carded wool with a raised nap that looks matte and feels warm. Weight usually 320–400 g (11–14 oz). Lighter “tropical flannel” is a marketing mash-up — if there is no nap, it is not flannel. The nap will pill at the cuffs and inner thighs; that is wear, not a factory defect, and a comb or a careful sweater stone handles it. Do not shave it with a cheap fabric razor until you have practised on a hidden seam.
A full flannel suit is a winter outfit. Grey flannel trousers next to a navy hopsack jacket are a three-season sport-coat uniform. Buy the trousers first if you already own a navy worsted.
Season, shoes, and ties
October to March in a temperate city is flannel season. An overheated office may still make 380 g miserable — that is what a midweight worsted is for. Shoes: cap-toe oxfords, derbies, suede in dry cold. Knit ties and wool challis belong here more than a shiny satin. A 36–40 mm watch on leather sits better than a bright steel bracelet that fights the matte cloth. Overcoat, not a bomber, over a flannel suit.

Pressing, hanging, and rain
Steam rather than crush the nap with a hot iron. A hard crease on flannel trousers is traditional; a melted shine at the crease is abuse. Hang on a shaped hanger; empty pockets so the 350 g cloth does not sag into bags. Rain mats the nap — let it dry on the hanger, then brush with the nap, not against. Moths like flannel. Cedar, airtight off-season, no food in pockets. A 3.5–4.5 cm cuff helps the hem of a heavy trouser hang into a slight break instead of climbing.
