Grey Trousers vs Khaki: Wool, Cotton, and the Blazer Test

Grey wool next to a navy blazer is the odd-trouser classic. Khaki cotton is a chino. They are not interchangeable in a room that can see a crease.

Grey Trousers vs Khaki: Wool, Cotton, and the Blazer Test — still life for this Menswear guide on Nonchallant

Odd trousers are the blazer’s partner

A navy blazer is an odd jacket. It wants trousers that do not match it. Mid-grey wool is the historical partner: enough contrast, a crease, a dress shoe. Charcoal wool is heavier in mood. Stone chino is the casual partner. Yellow khaki is the American default that often looks muddy next to gilt blazer buttons. If the room is blazer country, grey wool is the pant. If the room is open-collar Friday, stone cotton is the pant.

A matching navy trouser with a navy blazer is a suit you are trying not to name. Keep the cloths different or keep the trousers grey.

Cloth, crease, and season

Grey tropical wool 260–280 g for heat. Midweight 290–320 g for most offices. Grey flannel 340–380 g for winter. Khaki/stone cotton 250–320 gsm, no lasting razor crease. You can press cotton; it will not hold like wool. Shoes: grey wool wants oxfords, derbies, loafers in black or dark brown. Khaki wants brown and can take a clean sneaker. Black cap-toes with yellow khaki is a mismatch of formality.

How many of each

One mid-grey wool and one stone chino already cover more weeks than four khakis. Add charcoal wool if you own a navy suit and want odd trousers that still feel dressed. Add olive chino before a second khaki. Hem openings: 18–20.5 cm on the wool, 17.5–19.5 cm on the chino, slight break, shoes on at the tailor. A 7.5–9 cm blazer lapel next to grey wool and a 36–40 mm watch is one language. The same lapel next to dirty khaki and a 44 mm diver is two.

Questions, answered

Are khaki chinos acceptable with a blazer?
Stone or a cool khaki, hemmed, with brown shoes, in a relaxed office or at a weekend lunch: yes. Yellow mall khaki with gilt buttons and a grenadine: usually no.
Light grey or mid-grey?
Mid-grey hides more and photographs richer. Light grey is summer and shows every mark at the thigh.
Can grey cotton replace grey wool?
As a casual trouser, yes. It will not hold the crease or the drape of wool next to a canvassed blazer.
