Higher index means a thinner lens for the same prescription. You pay in money, reflections, and sometimes colour fringe. It is not a quality badge for a mild Rx.

Index is just density of bending

A 1.74 lens bends light more than a 1.50, so it can be thinner for the same dioptre. Minus lenses thin in the centre and go thick at the edge; high-index attacks that ring. Plus lenses are thick in the middle; high-index attacks the bulge. Neither changes the prescription. Both change cosmetics and weight.

Each step up reflects more light unless you coat it. Uncoated 1.74 is a pair of little mirrors. AR is not optional at the top end.

A practical ladder, not a brand ladder

Labs disagree at the margins. This is close enough for a buying conversation.

The frame does half the thinning

A 50mm lens is thicker at the edge than a 44mm lens in the same minus. Roll-and-polish, a smaller eye size, and an acetate rim hide more millimetres than jumping 1.67 to 1.74. Ask the optician to quote both indexes in the same frame before you pay for bragging rights.

Questions, answered

Does high-index make vision sharper?
No. It makes the lens thinner. Sharpness is the prescription, the PD, and the coat.
Why are my high-index lenses rainbow at the edge?
Lower Abbe number. Look through the centre. If it bothers you, drop an index or try Trivex if the Rx allows.
Is 1.74 always thinner than 1.67?
Yes for the same size and Rx, often by a millimetre or less. You may not see it in a thick acetate.
