How Long Should Suit Trousers Be: Hem, Break, and Cuff
A slight break is the default: one soft crease on the vamp. No-break is a fashion hem. A puddle is dirt collection. Measure with the shoes on.

The hem is a fitting, not a number on a chart
Inseam charts lie because rise and shoe pitch change the hang. A 2.5 cm leather heel versus a 3.5 cm fashion heel is a different length. Bring the oxfords or derbies. Stand straight, then sit, then walk. The front should just rest; the back should sit a little longer, about 0.5–1 cm, so the hem does not climb the Achilles. Taper the leg so the hem opening is about 18–20.5 cm on a straight suit trouser for most men — too skinny and the break bunches; too wide and it bells.

Cuffs, rise, and cloth weight
A cuff (turn-up) of 3.5–4.5 cm on flannel or heavy worsted adds weight so the hem hangs and the break stays. Plain hems on tropical wool keep the line clean in heat. Cuffs on a skinny 16 cm opening look like ankle weights. Rise: a 23–25 cm front rise keeps the waist at the waist so length is not stolen by a hip-sit. If trousers only fit when yanked up, the rise is wrong and the hem will never settle.

What the store will get wrong
Free hems done without your shoes often leave a 3–4 cm puddle “so you can grow.” You will not grow. Pin at the shop, walk, then let them sew. Unfinished extra 5–8 cm of cloth is a gift — keep enough for a second hem after a resoling that adds 3 mm. Do not hem over trainers if you will wear leather. A 36–40 mm watch does not affect trouser length; your 4 cm sneaker sole does.

- Should both legs be the same length if I have a hip tilt?
- No. A good tailor will hem to the stance, sometimes 0.5–1 cm difference. Stand naturally when they pin.
- Can I hem chinos the same as suit trousers?
- Slight break still works. Chinos can take a slightly shorter no-break in summer. Do not puddle cotton twill; it holds dirt.
- How much extra cloth should be left inside the hem?
- 2.5–4 cm is enough to let down after a new sole. More than 8 cm of hidden cloth adds bulk at the ankle.
