How Often to Replace a Bra
When the band is on the tightest hook and still rides, or the underwire sits on breast, it is done. For a daily bra that is often 6–12 months, not five years.

The band is the clock
New bra: loosest hook. Midlife: middle. Done: tightest and still floating or digging in a twisted way. Elastic has a life. Heat, wringing, and a dryer shorten it. Hand wash or a mesh bag, cool, air dry — the same respect you would not give a $12 fashion bra, which is why those die first.
Underwire that sits on tissue, not rib, is a size or a dead bra. Straps doing all the work is a dead band.
A rotation is cheaper
Elastic recovers if it rests. Two or three daily bras in the right size outlast one hero bra worn 30 days a month. Sports bras are a separate rotation — sweat and stretch — see sports fit.
- Daily T-shirt bra: 6–12 months
- Occasional lace: until the wire or the stretch fails
- Sports: 6–12 months of actual sport, sooner if bounce returns
Do not keep a museum
A stretched 36B you keep ‘for around the house’ is why shirts still look wrong at the weekend. Recycle or bin. If the size was always a guess, measure using band and cup rather than replacing in the old number on autopilot.
Questions, answered
- Can I put bras in the dryer on low?
- You can, and you will shorten them. Air dry.
- Why did a new bra feel loose in six weeks?
- You bought the band too big, or you only own one and wear it daily. Size down a sister or add a second bra.
- Do underwires rust?
- They can if you soak and do not dry. That is a replace, not a towel trick.
