Five minutes, then stop
How Often to Wash Your Face
Once at night, almost always. Again in the morning if you are oily, wore SPF to bed in a heatwave, or exercise at 6am. The rest can rinse.

Night is the non-negotiable
SPF and city film are the reason. A leave-on sunscreen is not a night cream. Makeup is not a night cream. One thorough cleanse, 30–60 seconds, lukewarm, then whatever order you actually do.
If you cannot face a sink, a micellar wipe is a trip, not a lifestyle — leftover surfactant still wants a water rinse when you can.
Morning is a skin-type question
Dry: water, then cream, then SPF. Oily or very humid: a gentle cleanser. Workout sweat at dawn: wash. A squeaky foam every morning on a retinoid face is optional damage.
| Morning situation | Wash? |
|---|---|
| Dry, indoor, no night mess | Rinse |
| Oily, humid, shine at 8am | Gentle cleanse |
| Slept in SPF / makeup | Yes — and fix the night |
| Just ran 8km | Yes |
Tools are not a personality
Hands are enough. A cloth is fine if you wash the cloth. Brushes and silicone paddles are how people scrub a barrier they were supposed to be cleaning. 60 seconds with fingers beats a 5-minute device.
Questions, answered
- Is washing three times a day ever right?
- After a sweaty commute, maybe a third gentle wash. As a default, no.
- Can I just use water at night?
- Not if you wore SPF. Water does not lift a modern sunscreen film well.
- Why am I drier when I wash more?
- You are removing the oil you still needed. Less surfactant, more cream.
