Five minutes, then stop
How to Apply Sunscreen on a Face
Two fingers, face and neck, including ears and hairline. Rub in, then stop touching it. The missed strip at the hairline is the burn line.

The two-finger rule is not a meme
Lab SPF uses 2mg per square centimetre. On an adult face and neck that is roughly a teaspoon, which is the two-finger line of a typical lotion. Sprays and sticks are easier to under-dose; spray until the skin is wet, then spread with hands, then spray again if it looks polite.
Order: water serums, treatments, cream if you need it, then sunscreen last — thin to thick.
The places people skip
Hairline, lids, ears, sides of the nose, neck, the V of a shirt if it will drop. Lid products should be ophthalmology-tested if you are watery-eyed; otherwise keep it to the orbital bone. Lips: a dedicated SPF balm, not hope.
| Zone | How people fail |
|---|---|
| Hairline | Stop at the bangs |
| Eyelids | Fear, then a burn line |
| Ears | Forgot |
| Neck | Face-only habit |
| Hands | Not a face, still in the sun on a wheel |
Makeup and the minute of patience
Let it set. Then concealer. If you immediately blend foundation through a wet SPF, you get pills and a lower dose where you wiped. Tinted SPF used at this same quantity can be the whole base.
Questions, answered
- Do I need it on a cloudy day?
- UVA comes through cloud and glass. Morning layer, yes. Reapply depends on how much outdoor time you actually have.
- Can I use body SPF on my face?
- You can. It may sting eyes and feel greasy. Face formulas exist for that reason, not for prestige.
- How soon before I go out?
- Mineral: once it is on. Chemical: 10–20 minutes if you want the label. Both need the dose.
