Brush is the wash
Surface dirt is most of what a coat collects. A brush takes it before it becomes grind. A lint roller is for the sofa. Rain: shake, dry, brush. Salt stains on a wool hem: a 1:1 vinegar cloth, then a cleaner if it remains.
How often a ticket
Once a season for a city coat you wore hard. A country wool you barely soiled can go longer if you spot and brush. Home blazer rules apply: fused fronts and padded shoulders do not go in a machine. A $15–30 clean-and-press in April, then store.
Summer is when moths eat coats

- Can I wash a wool coat in the bathtub?
- Unstructured boiled-wool duffles sometimes survive a gentle soak. A tailored overcoat does not. Weight plus water plus glue is a wreck.
- Steam or iron the lapel?
- Steam, hanging. An iron flattens the roll and shines the wool unless you use a cloth and a tailor’s ham.
- Pilling on the cuffs and bag strap?
- Comb it. That is abrasion, not a bad mill. Stop wearing a backpack over a coat you care about, or depill as maintenance.
