How to Choose a Belt Size: Measure the Jeans, Not Your Waist
A belt is sized to the trousers you already own, at the hole you actually use. Your dress-shirt waist is a different number.

The hole you use is the size
Belt size is not pant size printed on a flag. A 34 jean can want a 36 belt if you wear it on the hip. Take a belt that already works. Measure from the leather fold where the buckle hardware starts — not the buckle tip — to the most-worn hole. That number is the size to reorder.
New belt, no reference: lay the trousers flat, measure the waistband end to end, double it, add 2 inches, round to the usual even size. You should land on hole three of five, not hole one (too long) or hole five (too short, and the tail looks desperate).

Width, thickness, and the leftover tail
Dress: 25–30mm, 3–3.5mm leather, simple buckle. Casual: 32–38mm. Over 40mm is a statement that fights a suit. Thickness belongs in the thickness guide — too thin on jeans looks like office leftover; too thick on suiting looks like a tool belt.
The tail past the keeper should be 5–12cm. Longer and you look like you lost weight you have not lost. Shorter and the buckle sits on the last hole, which is how leather splits.
Colour is the shoes, not the mood
Brown belt with brown shoes, black with black. Navy suede is the exception that still wants a dark belt, not a novelty. The full pairing is belt and shoes and black versus brown.
Buy leather you can recraft — full-grain, a stitched keeper, a buckle that unscrews. Bonded leather cracks at the hole in a year. That is the same warning as what genuine leather means.
Questions, answered
- Should I size up if I am between sizes?
- Yes if you are between even sizes and you wear the belt on jeans. A slightly long belt on the middle hole is usable; a short belt is not.
- Do European cm sizes match US inches?
- A 95cm belt is about 37 inches. Convert, then still check the hole you will use. Brands do not all start the tape at the same point of the buckle.
- Can a cobbler add holes?
- Yes, $5–$15, and they will punch them in a line. A kitchen skewer is how you tear the leather on a diagonal.
