How to Choose a Leather Belt: Width, Buckle, and Hide

Width is a measurement that tells on you

Trouser loops on a suit and on wool dress pants are cut for a 30–32 mm strap. A 38 mm casual belt will not pass through, or will bunch the loops. Jean loops take 35–40 mm. Do not force a dress belt through jeans and call it versatility — the strap will curl and the buckle will look lost on 16 oz denim. Thickness: 3–4 mm for dress, 4–5 mm for casual. A 6 mm double-layer fashion belt is a statement, not a trouser belt.

The buckle should be a simple frame, 3.5–4.5 cm wide, in silver-tone if your watch case is steel, gilt if you actually wear gold — but a brushed steel buckle with a 36–40 mm steel watch is the default. Big logos, roller buckles the size of a door knocker, and flag motifs are not a first belt.

Hide, construction, and the word genuine

Full-grain or good top-grain calf, vegetable or mixed tannage, will take a cream and a new hole. Bonded and corrected grain stamped with a fake pebble is the same warning as genuine leather: the word is legal, not a grade. Look at the cut edge. You should see a dense fibre, not a sandwich of fibreboard. Stitched edges last longer than painted edges. $60–150 is the band where a belt can be a decade; $20 is a season.

Size the holes, not the vanity waist

If you wear a 34 trouser, a belt labelled 34 often sits on the first hole. Buy 36 or measure waist over the trousers and add 5–7 cm. The prong should land on the middle hole so you can gain or lose a little. Five to seven holes, evenly spaced at 2.5 cm. A tail that sticks 8–10 cm past the first loop is too long; under 3 cm and you bought small. Do not punch a new hole with a fork. Use an oval punch so the leather does not tear into a slot.
