How to Cuff Jeans: Single, Double, Height, and When to Hem Instead

A 2.5–4 cm single cuff is the default. A double cuff is thicker and shorter. If you need 8 cm of rolls to walk, you need a hem.

How to Cuff Jeans: Single, Double, Height, and When to Hem Instead — still life for this Menswear guide on Nonchallant

Height is a measurement, not a vibe

Pin the jean standing, in the shoes you will wear. A single cuff of 3 cm takes about 3 cm of length and adds a band of cloth. The new hem should sit at the top of a derby or with a slight kiss on a sneaker, not puddle. If you are rolling four times, the inseam is 8–10 cm too long. Hem. Selvedge ID is visible on a single cuff of 2.5–4 cm; a tiny 1 cm roll hides it and looks nervous.

Trouser break is a different system — break explained — for wool and chinos. Do not chase a full break and a cuff on the same jean.

Shoes change the cuff

Chelseas and chukkas: a single cuff that clears the elastic or the laces, showing 2–3 cm of boot. Loafers: a shorter cuff or a no-cuff hem so the apron shows; no-show socks if the ankle is on stage. Sneakers: a single cuff or a clean hem at the sole. Cap-toe oxfords: cuffing jeans over a funeral shoe is usually the wrong outfit, not the wrong cuff. Work boots: a wider cuff can sit on the shaft; still hem if you are stacking.

When cuffing is hiding a fit problem

Stacked folds above a skinny 16 cm opening are length plus taper plus denial. A tailor can hem selvedge with a chainstitch and keep the ID at the outseam — ask. Press the cuff once if you want it to stay; a soft roll will unroll on a bike. Do not cuff chinos the same 4 cm as jeans unless you are going for a naval short; chinos usually want a proper hem and a slight break. One cuff language per outfit. A cuffed jean, a cuffed shirt, and a turned overcoat collar is three rolls.

Questions, answered

Is cuffing jeans outdated?
A small single cuff with boots or to show selvedge is still a hem strategy. A 8 cm double-stack on skinny jeans is a 2013 photograph.
Can I cuff raw denim before the first soak?
You can. If they are unsanforized, hem and cuff after shrink or you will end up too short. Sanforized: cuff whenever the length is right.
Should both legs be even?
Yes, within a few millimetres. Uneven cuffs read as a mistake, not as nonchalance.
