How to Dimple a Tie: Pinch, Cinch, and What Not to Fold

The pinch is timed, not decorative

You cannot add a dimple after the knot is locked. As the knot comes up the last 2–3 cm, pinch. Index on the face, thumb behind, a single fold, not two. Hold while you tighten the hanging narrow end. If the knot rotates, the wraps were uneven — undo rather than twist. A trench down the full blade is too much; you want a valley that dies before the chest button. Practice forty times on a throwaway tie, then put it on the grenadine.

Four-in-hand dimples naturally because the knot is already a bit asymmetric. Half-Windsor needs a more deliberate pinch or the face goes flat. Full Windsor can dimple, but the bulk fights you. The method sits on top of which knot the collar actually wants.

Cloth that holds, cloth that lies

Garza fina grenadine holds a dimple because the open weave has spring. A lined silk repp holds one. Satin wedding ties often slide flat. Unlined wool challis can take a soft dimple; a hard pinch shines the face. Polyester fashion ties collapse in an hour. If the dimple is gone by lunch, the lining is foam or the silk is too thin — not your fingers.

• Hold 3–4 cm of crease, then stop pinching
• One valley, centred, not a zigzag
• Tighten the nest, then the collar, not the reverse
• Skip the dimple on knits and on anything with a square bottom

Scale against lapel and watch

A 5 cm skinny tie cannot dimple into a triangle; there is no cloth. An 8 cm blade on an 8 cm notch looks like one system. A 10 cm 1970s blade against a 6.5 cm lapel makes the dimple look like a costume forehead. Keep the watch at 36–40 mm and 9–11 mm thick so the cuff, the dimple, and the lapel read as one width family. If the dimple sits crooked after a pinch, the blade was twisted in the wrap — start over.
