How to Exfoliate Without Wrecking Your Barrier
Once or twice a week for most faces. Acids over scrubs. If it stings to wash, you already overdid it. Cream is the next product, not a stronger peel.

The goal is a little, on purpose
Exfoliation speeds up the shedding you already do. A little evens texture. A lot is a wound. Physical scrubs with irregular pits (apricot) scratch. If you want physical, a fine jessner-smooth polish once a week is the ceiling.
Chemical: leave-on acid, timed, rinsed if it is a peel, or left if it is a 2% BHA. More time is not more virtue.
A schedule that survives October
Retinoid nights and acid nights are different nights until your face is bored. Wash, dry, acid, wait, cream. SPF in the morning — acids plus sun is how people ‘mysteriously’ burn.
| Skin right now | Exfoliation |
|---|---|
| Quiet, a bit dull | 1–2× a week, one acid |
| On a retinoid already | 0–1× a week, or none |
| Stinging, flaking, red | None. Cream. Time. |
| Oily, clogged | BHA 2% a few nights, not a daily peel pad |
Repair is subtraction
When you have wrecked it, you do not add a new ‘recovery serum’ stack. Gentle cleanser, bland cream, SPF, stop the acids and the retinoid until water does not sting. Then one active back. That is the whole repair.
Questions, answered
- Can I exfoliate every day if it is a ‘gentle’ pad?
- Daily pads are how barriers die quietly. Two or three times a week.
- Is a konjac sponge exfoliation?
- Mildly. If you scrub with it, yes. If you use it like a washcloth, it is just a cloth — and cloths need washing.
- Why is my skin shiny and tight?
- Often over-exfoliation, not oil. Stop. Cream.
