How to Find Your Undertone
Undertone is the cast under the surface colour. The vein test is a hint, not a court. Foundation that goes grey or orange is the real exam.

Surface versus under
Overtone is how light or deep you are, and whether you are currently pink from weather. Undertone is the yellow, peach, olive, pink, or red that stays when the tan fades. A deep cool exists. A fair warm exists. Depth and undertone are two axes.
Olive is a muted green-grey cast that fools both warm and cool testers. If every beige goes clown and every pink goes ashy, you may be olive — try olive-labelled bases.
Tests that help, tests that lie
Jaw in north daylight: useful. Phone selfie with a filter: not useful. White shirt versus cream shirt: sometimes useful. A TikTok quiz: entertainment.
- Cool: pink, red, or bluish cast; silver often easier
- Warm: yellow, peach, golden; gold often easier
- Neutral: both, or you can wear both metals without a fight
- Olive: muted, foundations need a green or grey in them
Why this matters for five-minute makeup
Wrong undertone in a tinted SPF is more obvious than a slightly wrong depth, because it looks like a mask at the jaw. Get undertone close, then adjust depth seasonally. A clean-girl routine has nowhere to hide a grey jaw.

- Tan changes overtone. Undertone mostly stays. You may need a deeper bottle in August of the same undertone.
- What if wrist and face disagree?
- Believe the jaw. You do not wear foundation on your wrist.
- Are my veins the law?
- No. Lighting and vessel depth confuse it. Use it as a vote, then swatch.
