How to Wear a Trench Coat: Length, Belt, and the Suit Test
A trench is a cotton rain coat with a belt, storm flap, and raglan or set-in sleeves. Mid-knee is the length that covers a jacket. Cinched too tight it looks like theatre.

Length, raglan, and what it must cover
Mid-knee on a 175–180 cm man is roughly 100–110 cm from collar. Shorter “trenches” at 85 cm are fashion coats that will not cover a 74 cm jacket. The sleeve must cover the jacket sleeve. Raglan shoulders sit easier over a suit than a tight set-in. Chest: 3–4 cm of ease over the jacket so a 7.5–9 cm lapel is not crushed. If you only wear it over tees, you can size closer — but then it will fail the suit test later.
A wool overcoat is the cold-weather counterpart in peacoat versus overcoat. Do not stand in 2 °C rain in unlined gabardine and wonder why you are cold.
The belt, the buttons, and the costume line
Belt: knot at the front, or buckle on a comfortable hole, tails not dragging into puddles. Tying at the back is a fashion pose that prevents you from buttoning. Storm flap stays. Epaulettes can stay; if they have decorative chains, cut the theatre. Colour: stone or khaki is the trench everyone pictures; navy is quieter in a city and shows less dirt at the hem. Black is a fashion trench and can look like security.

Shoes, hats, and the watch you will not see
Shoes: dark calf, rubbered soles in rain, not suede, not white mesh sneakers that take the splash. A slight trouser break still matters; a trench does not hide a puddled hem that sucks water. Collar up in wind is functional. A 36–40 mm watch stays under the shirt and jacket; do not buy a trench to display hardware. One good trench in stone or navy, re-waterproofed every year or two, beats three fast-fashion trenches that curl at the collar after a season.

- Is a trench too costume for everyday?
- A clean navy or stone gabardine, quietly belted, is a city rain coat. A khaki trench with every strap fastened and a fedora is a costume. Edit the straps.
- Single or double-breasted?
- Double-breasted is the classic trench. Single-breasted fly-front is cleaner and a bit more modern. Both work if the length is right.
- Can I wear a trench in winter?
- With a button-in liner or a heavy knit, in a mild winter. Below freezing, wear wool. Gabardine is wind-resistant, not magic.
