Knit Tie vs Silk Tie: When the Square Bottom Wins
Woven silk is the formal blade with a dimple. A knit is a ribbed, square-ended, informal tie. Grenadine sits between them. Do not Windsor a knit.

They are different objects
Woven silk is cut on the bias, lined or unlined, pointed tip, takes a dimple, takes a half-Windsor if the collar wants one. A knit is a tube of ribbed silk or wool, square end, almost no lining, a casual register even in navy. Grenadine is woven (garza), not knit, and is the dressy textured silk that still dimples — do not confuse it with a knit because both look “not printed.”
Knot rules sit in how to tie a tie. Knits: loose four-in-hand or Oriental. Never a Windsor. Never a pinch dimple. The square end should still reach the belt, maybe 1 cm short is forgivable because the end is already informal.
Rooms, jackets, and width
Blazer, hopsack, flannel odd jacket: knit is at home. First navy suit, interview: woven silk. Funeral: woven silk, dark, dimple. Knit with open-collar? Then skip the knit — two casual signals is enough; wear the open collar or the knit, not both. Width: 7–8 cm knits next to 7.5–9 cm notches. A 5 cm knit against a 9 cm peak looks like a shoestring.
| Tie | Knot | Dimple | Default setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven silk repp / print | Four-in-hand or half-Windsor | Yes | Office, ceremony |
| Grenadine | Four-in-hand or half-Windsor | Yes | The one textured silk that still does interviews |
| Silk or wool knit | Loose four-in-hand | No | Blazer, Friday suit, sport coat |
Care, cost, and the drawer
Knits snag. Do not yank them off; roll or hang. A $40–90 knit from a mill that actually knits is enough; a $15 viscose knit pills into a fur. Woven silk: $50–150 for grenadine or a decent repp. One navy grenadine and one navy knit will do more than eight novelty prints. Keep the watch at 36–40 mm so a textured tie and a huge case are not both asking for attention. A crew-neck knit sweater over a collared shirt is a different layer than a knit tie — pick one texture at the neck.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear a knit tie to a job interview?
- Only in a clearly casual industry, with a sport coat, and even then a grenadine is safer. Conservative rooms want woven silk and a dimple.
- Is grenadine a knit?
- No. It is a woven gauze. It dimples, it takes a proper knot, and it is dressier than a knit. Useful confusion to unlearn.
- Wool knit or silk knit?
- Silk knit for three seasons and a slight sheen. Wool knit for winter and flannel. Linen knit for heat, and it will wrinkle.
