Is Lip Liner Necessary?
Necessary for a sharp edge, a bigger-looking mouth, and any lipstick that migrates. Optional for a balm stain you blot once.

What the line is for
A dam at the vermilion border. A place to put colour if the lipstick is expensive and short-lived. A way to even left and right. It is not required for moral completeness.
Overdrawing by 1mm at the cupid’s bow can look intended. Overdrawing by 3mm looks like a sticker in daylight.
One liner, many lipsticks
A nude-pink or nude-brown close to your lip is the single useful pencil. It underpins most shades. A perfect match for every lipstick is a drawer you will not use.
| Look | Liner? |
|---|---|
| Balm, tint, blot | No |
| Satin mid-pink, lunch | Optional |
| Red, berry, photos | Yes |
| Known feathering | Yes, and fill |
Texture on dry lips
A drying liner on a cracked mouth emphasizes cracks. Balm, wait, blot, then liner. If the pencil drags, it is too dry or the lip is — fix the lip. Sharpen so the point is a hair, not a crayon.
Questions, answered
- Clear liner?
- A waxy clear ring can help gloss stay put. It will not add colour. Fine as a trick, not a requirement.
- Should liner be darker?
- A shade deeper is a definition trick. A much darker ring is 1990s on purpose. Know which you are doing.
- Pencil or crayon?
- Pencil for the edge. Crayon can fill. Keep the edge sharp either way.
