Merino vs Cotton T-Shirt: Which Fabric for Daily Wear
Cotton is cheaper and cooler at rest. Merino is warmer per gram, smells less on day two, and hates a hot dryer. Most people want both.

What each fibre is for
Cotton is cellulose. It soaks sweat, holds it, and can smell by dinner in July. It also takes dye, print, and a 40°C wash. A 180–220gsm combed or pima crew is the white tee you already know; details in white-tee fabric.
Merino is protein. It buffers temperature, wicks, and resists odor because the fibre is scaly and slightly antimicrobial. A 150–180gsm merino tee packs to a fist and can go two or three travel days. It pills if you wear a backpack all day, and a dryer will felt it. Wash as wool — see merino wash.

Microns, gsm, and the itch story
17–19 micron merino is next-to-skin for most people. 21+ feels like a sweater pretending to be a tee. gsm is weight: 140gsm is a summer layer, 180gsm is a year-round daily, 200gsm+ is a cool-weather base. If you are between sizes, merino has less give than cotton jersey; size as the maker suggests, not as your cotton tee.
A merino-cotton blend (70/30 or 80/20) is the peace treaty: less odor than cotton, less drama than 100% merino in a dryer you will forget. It will not be as packable.
Cost per wear, honestly
A $70 merino tee worn 80 travel days and washed in a sink is cheaper per wear than a $25 cotton tee that smells by lunch. A $70 merino tee worn to the supermarket and then felted in a dryer is a $70 lesson. Own two merino, not twelve, until you know you will wash them cold and air-dry.
For a synthetic travel layer, polyester still dries faster than merino. Merino wins the dinner that follows the walk.
Questions, answered
- Will merino itch?
- At 17–19 micron, rarely if you do not have a wool allergy. If a sweater itches you, try one tee from a shop with returns before you commit.
- Can I put merino in the dryer?
- No. Low heat still felts it over a season. Air-dry flat or on a hanger, out of the sun.
- White merino or navy?
- Navy and grey hide the reality of travel. White merino shows every backpack rub and deodorant ghost. Cotton still owns cheap white.
