Monk Strap vs Oxford: Buckles, Formality, and Fit
An oxford closes with laces under the vamp. A monk closes with one or two buckles. The oxford is the formal default. The monk is a character shoe you buy second.

One buckle, two buckles, no laces
A single monk has one strap, usually high on the instep, one buckle on the outside. It is the cleaner monk. A double monk has two straps, more metal, more 2010s fashion memory. Both are open in spirit: the quarters are not closed under the vamp like an oxford, so they fit a higher instep better, like a derby. The buckle should be in scale with the shoe — about 1.5–2 cm of hardware, not a belt buckle on a foot.
Oxfords remain the shoe for court, funerals, and the most conservative interviews. A monk in those rooms is a choice the room will notice. In a creative or smart office, a dark calf single-monk with a navy two-button is a legitimate weekday shoe.
Where the monk actually belongs
Navy or charcoal suit, weekday, dark brown or black calf single-monk: yes, in most offices that already accept brown shoes. Double-monk, burnished tan, chunky commando: chinos and a sport coat, not Super 120s. Suede monks: autumn, dry pavement, grey flannel. Avoid monk straps with shorts, with a full break puddle that hides the buckle, and with a tuxedo — satin oxfords or opera pumps, not buckles.

Fit: the strap is not a belt
The strap should close on the middle hole with the foot in the shoe, standing. If you are on the last hole, the last is too small or the instep is too high for that pattern. If you are on the first, the shoe is swimming. Heel slip of 2–3 mm in a new leather-soled monk is normal; 1 cm is a size problem. Keep the trouser hem at a slight break so the buckle shows 1–2 cm. A no-break crop that hits the strap looks unfinished.

- A dark single-monk can pass in a modern office. For law, banking, government, wear an oxford. Do not let the shoe be the thing they remember.
