Two jobs, two tools
Sunglasses are a filter you choose: tint, polarization, mirror, category 3 or 4. Photochromics are a compromise that tries to be clear at a desk and dark on a pavement. Compromises are allowed. They are still compromises.
If your week is office plus a 12-minute walk, photochromic is enough. If your week is 90 minutes of windscreen glare, it is not — see driving sunglasses.
Cost over three years
Photochromic add-on: $80–$180 once, on a pair you replace every 2–3 years anyway. Extra prescription sun pair: $90–$250, plus the indoor pair. Clip-on: $25–$80. The clip-on is the cheapest way to have a real sun lens and a clear indoor lens. It is also the easiest to lose.

A boring recommendation
Indoor pair, clear, anti-reflective. A polarized UV400 sun pair or clip-on for the car. Add photochromic only if you already know you will not carry the second pair. Do not buy photochromic and a $200 sun pair in the same appointment unless you drive enough to use both.
Questions, answered
- Will photochromics get as dark as sunglasses?
- In cold full sun, close. In a hot car, no. Category 3 dedicated lenses still win.
- Can I polarize a separate sun pair and skip photochromic?
- Yes. That is the driving setup. Polarization plus UV400 on a dark lens.
- Do photochromics work on a covered terrace?
- Poorly. No UV, no darkening. You will look under-dressed for the glare and over-dressed for the shade.
