How to Fold a Pocket Square: Puff, TV Fold, and When to Stop

Two folds, not twelve

Puff: pinch the square in the centre, stuff the tails into the pocket, adjust the crown so 1.5–2.5 cm of cloth shows, slightly irregular. That irregularity is the point. TV fold: fold to a rectangle, then to a strip, then lay a straight edge along the pocket welt, 0.8–1.2 cm of white. Crown / multi-peak folds are for people who already wear a square every day. If you need a YouTube tutorial with six peaks, wear a puff.

The pocket is on the jacket, so the square lives with the suit or a blazer, not with a field jacket. Depth of a working breast pocket is about 14–16 cm; a 32 cm linen folds into that without a lump if the tails are nested, not wadded.

Linen, cotton, silk — and colour

White linen is the one square that works with every navy and charcoal jacket you own. Cotton is similar, a bit deader. Silk twill takes colour and pattern; puff it, do not TV-fold a busy print into a billboard. Colour: pick up the shirt, a quiet stripe, or a secondary in the jacket — not the exact tie. A navy grenadine plus a navy silk square plus a navy suit is a blob. White linen plus the grenadine is a system.

Scale against lapel and tie

A 7.5–9 cm notch next to a 2 cm puff is balanced. A 6.5 cm skinny lapel next to a 4 cm silk fountain is a costume. Knit ties already texture the chest; keep the square quieter — white linen, not printed silk. Black tie: white linen or a white silk puff, never a coloured print, never matching the bow as a set. Iron linen squares; a crushed puff looks like a tissue. A 36–40 mm watch is unrelated except as another place not to add a third pattern.
