Why Polarized Sunglasses Black Out Phone Screens
The phone is already polarized. Two polarizers at 90 degrees make a black screen. This is physics, not a defect.

Two sets of blinds
Polarizing film is a set of microscopic slats. Reflections off water and bonnets are partly sorted; the film rejects them. Phone and many car displays already send light through their own slats. Stack two slats at a right angle and you get black. Rotate 10–30 degrees and the image returns, sometimes with a cyan-magenta shift.
This is the same party trick as looking at a laptop and rotating the glasses. It is also why some people think a pair is ‘broken’ in a shop. It is not.
Where it actually annoys you
Navigation on a handlebar. A phone on a kayak deck. A HUD that was not designed for polarized sunwear. Airport check-in screens. If that is your week, UV400 without polarization is the better daily lens; keep polarized for the water day.

- A second non-polarized pair in the glovebox is $20–$40
- Mirrors and gradients do not fix this; they are unrelated coatings
Do not drop UV to save the screen
The wrong fix is a cheap unrated lens because ‘at least I can see Maps.’ Buy UV400 unpolarized. Darkness without UV is still the funnel problem in the UV400 guide. Polarization is optional comfort. UV is not.
Questions, answered
- Will all phones do this?
- Most LCDs will. Some OLEDs less so, some more, depending on the polarizer stack. Tilt is the test.
- Is there a polarized lens that does not do this?
- Not really, if both filters are linear. Some displays are less fussy. You cannot shop your way out of the physics entirely.
- Should drivers skip polarization?
- Only if the dash or HUD dies. Most cars are fine. Check before a long drive, not during it.
