Raw Denim First Pair: Weight, Soak, and the Six-Month Stiffness

A first raw pair is 13–15 oz, sanforized or one-wash, mid-rise, not a 21 oz trophy. Wear them hard. Wash them eventually. The myth of never-wash is a hygiene problem.

Raw Denim First Pair: Weight, Soak, and the Six-Month Stiffness — still life for this Menswear guide on Nonchallant

Sanforized, unsanforized, one-wash

Sanforized: pre-shrunk. The 32 you buy is close to a 32 after a cold wash. Unsanforized: the cloth will tighten when wet; some makers want a soak in the tub before first wear, some want you to wear first. Read the card. One-wash: the mill already soaked them, so you get raw-ish colour with less shrink shock. For a first pair, sanforized or one-wash 14 oz is the sane object. Leave unsanforized 18 oz for when you already know your size in that mill.

Selvedge is common on raw pairs but not required. The edge explanation sits in selvedge jeans. Buy the cut you will sit in, not the cut that photographs on a 60 kg model.

Break-in without the folklore

They will be stiff. 13–15 oz becomes human in 2–4 weeks of real days, not 2–4 hours. Knees bag. Waist eases 1–2 cm on many pairs. If the thigh is already tight standing, it will not “stretch into” a desk job. Crotch blowout is usually a rise and stride problem. Wash when they smell, take a stain, or after a season of wear — inside-out, cold, mild detergent, hang. The never-wash myth is how jeans rot at the fly.

Shoes, belts, and not living in them

Raw indigo crocks onto light sofas, pale leather, and some unfinished leather belts. Wear a dark belt. White sneakers will take a blue ring at the sole; dark derbies and chukkas are easier. Hem after shrink, not before, on unsanforized. On sanforized, hem when the break or cuff is decided — see the cuff page rather than stacking 8 cm of roll because you were afraid of scissors. Rotate with chinos so the jean is a garment, not a personality.

Questions, answered

Should I soak my first raw pair?
If they are unsanforized and the mill says soak, soak. If they are sanforized, you do not need a ceremonial bathtub. A later cold wash is enough.
How tight should they feel in the shop?
Snug at the waist with a finger inside the band, wearable in the thigh when you sit on the shop chair. Pain in the sit bones is too small.
Can I machine-dry raw denim?
You can shrink and fade them unevenly. Hang dry. Heat is for towels, not for a pair you wanted fades on.
