Retinol vs Retinal: What Changes
Both are vitamin A. Retinal is one step closer to retinoic acid, so it is usually stronger and ruder. Neither is a prescription tretinoin.

One extra conversion
Skin turns retinol into retinal into retinoic acid, the form that binds the receptor. Each step loses some of the dose. Retinal skips a step, which is why 0.05% retinal can feel like a stronger retinol. Prescription tretinoin is already the acid; do not treat a 0.3% retinol like a script.
Encapsulated formulas and cream bases are slower and kinder than a thin serum of the same percentage. The percentage on the label is not a clean ranking across brands.
How to start without wrecking the week
Two nights a week, pea-sized for the whole face, not on wet skin, not around a freshly peeled mouth. Sandwich with moisturizer if you flake. Wait 4 weeks before you increase. If you peel, sting, and go red for ten days, you went too hard — that is a barrier problem, not ‘purging’ as a personality.
- Night only, as a default
- SPF 30+ every morning if you are using either
- Do not combine with a strong AHA the same night until you are bored of being intact
What ‘results’ even means here
Texture and tone are a months-long project. If a bottle promises a new face in seven days, it is a peel or a lie. Store retinal and retinol away from heat and sun; they oxidize. Brown, fishy, or empty-feeling oil is done — same instinct as expired product.
Questions, answered
- Is retinal always better?
- It is often stronger. Better depends on whether you will still be using it in November. Retinol you use beats retinal you quit.
- Can I use either around the eyes?
- A dedicated low-strength formula, maybe, if the skin stays quiet. Do not drag a 0.1% retinal serum into the lid as a default.
- Pregnant or trying?
- Skip topical vitamin A unless a clinician told you otherwise. This page is not that conversation.
