Selvedge Jeans for Men: The ID, the Weight, and the First Pair
Selvedge is a self-finished edge from a shuttle loom, not a quality spell. 13–16 oz unsanforized or sanforized indigo is the first pair. Cuff to show the ID only if the length is right.

What the red line actually is
A shuttle loom weaves a closed edge. That edge is the selvedge. Brands often put a coloured yarn there (red, white, gold) as an ID. Non-selvedge denim is woven wider on projectile looms and cut; the outseam is overlocked. Both can be excellent. Selvedge became a signal of slower, narrower cloth, often Japanese or American mills (Cone, Kuroki, Kaihara). The signal is not a guarantee. Look at weight, dye, and the last — the pattern of the jean — as much as the ID.
Raw (unwashed) selvedge is a separate choice covered in your first pair of raw denim. You can buy selvedge that is already rinsed or one-washed if you want the edge without the six-month stiffness.
Weight, rise, and the cuff
13–14 oz: the all-rounder. 15–16 oz: more structure, slower break-in. 18–21 oz: a project, not a first jean. Rise: mid (23–25 cm front) sits like a trouser; low rise will fight a belt and a slight break. Leg opening 16.5–20 cm depending on shoe. Cuff 2.5–4 cm to show selvedge only after the length is correct — cuffing is not a substitute for a hem. How to roll is a separate length decision.

Shoes, jackets, and not treating denim as a personality
Dark indigo selvedge with a navy blazer can work if the jean is clean and hemmed. With a chore or a field jacket it is at home. Shoes: derbies, loafers, chelseas or chukkas, leather sneakers. Mirror-shine cap-toe oxfords with raw cuffs is a fight of registers. One pair of dark indigo, one pair of faded when the first has actually faded, is a denim wardrobe. Five raw pairs in rotation so none of them fade is a hobby. Either is fine; only one belongs in a capsule.

- Is selvedge worth it over a $50 jean?
- If you like the cloth, the fade potential, and a cleaner outseam, yes in the $80–180 band. If you just want blue trousers, a well-cut non-selvedge is honest.
- Do I have to cuff selvedge?
- No. The jean should look finished uncuffed. The ID is a bonus when a short cuff makes sense with the shoe.
- Will selvedge last longer?
- A dense 14 oz will outlast a thin fashion denim. The loom type is not a warranty. Seat blowouts happen on cheap and dear pairs when the rise is wrong.
