Sports Bra Fit Guide
The band still does the work. High-impact means less bounce, not a fashion racerback. If you can jump and watch the mirror, you can fit one.

Impact is a bounce rating
Low: walking, yoga. Medium: cycling, weights, most studio. High: running, HIIT, horseback. A medium bra on a run is how people decide they ‘hate sports bras.’ The cup size you are in a T-shirt bra is the starting letter; some sport brands cut small in the cup.
Try-on test: jump in front of a mirror. Watch the side view. Straps should not do all the work.
Compression, encapsulation, and the band
Compression squishes. Encapsulation holds each side. Many good high-impact bras do both. The band should not roll. A racerback is a strap geometry, not extra support by itself.
| Tell | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Band rides up when you lift arms | Too big — sister down |
| Flesh out the armpit or neckline | Cup too small or wrong shape |
| Straps dig, band is loose | Band too big |
| Bounce on a jog in the aisle | Wrong impact or dead elastic |
Sweat, wash, replace
Do not live in a wet sports bra after the session — it is a salt pack and a way to irritate skin you may also shave. Wash cool, air dry. When the jump test fails in a bra that used to pass, replace it. $30–$70 for a high-impact that you will actually run in. Two is a rotation.
Questions, answered
- Should I size up in sports bras?
- Only if that brand’s band runs tight and the cups then gape. Many people need the same band as their daily bra or a sister down. Try on.
- Can a sports bra be a daily bra?
- A light one, around the house, yes. A high-impact as all-day wear can be a lot of compression. Have a T-shirt bra.
- Front zip?
- Easier on, still needs a snug band. Check bounce. A zip is not extra support.
