Spread Collar vs Point Collar: Angle, Tie Knot, and Face Shape
Point collars close the gap and take a four-in-hand. Spread collars open 90–120° and need a larger knot. The angle is a measurement, not a vibe.

Measure the angle, then pick the knot
Lay the shirt flat. The spread is the angle between the two points. Under 90° is a point. 90–120° is a spread. Over 140° is a cutaway. Point length of 7 cm on a point collar looks classic; 9 cm points on a cutaway will flap without a pin or a huge knot. Collar band height of 3.5–4.5 cm is wearable; a 5.5 cm theatrical band will fight a normal jacket collar.
Knot fill follows the gap. Four-in-hand into a point. Half-Windsor into a moderate spread. Full Windsor into a cutaway. The pairing is in half-Windsor versus four-in-hand. A four-in-hand floating in an 8 cm gap looks unfinished, not nonchalant.
Face, jacket, and the collar that disappears
A short neck wants a lower band (under 4 cm) and a point that does not climb. A long neck can take a spread. A round face is not a reason to buy a cutaway; a moderate spread is enough structure. The jacket collar should hide the shirt collar’s back by 1–1.5 cm and show 1–1.5 cm of shirt at the front. If you see a halo of shirt around the jacket collar, the shirt collar is too tall or the jacket is too small in the neck.

What to buy first
Two white and two light-blue point-collar shirts in a 2-ply cotton, collar 38–44 cm as measured, will do more than one cutaway with contrast thread. A moderate spread is the second collar once you own a suit with a proper 7.5–9 cm notch. Stay fused or lightly lined in the collar — unlined fashion collars collapse by 3 pm. Collar stays: metal in the point, removable. Plastic stays that curl are disposable.

- Can I wear a spread collar without a tie?
- A moderate spread open-neck can work with a sport coat. A cutaway without a tie looks like a missing accessory. Points and button-downs open more cleanly.
- Does a spread collar make my face look thinner?
- A moderate spread adds a horizontal line. It will not reshape a jaw. Buy the collar that fills with the knot you can tie.
- Are tab and pin collars worth it?
- They force a tight knot and a vintage register. Fine as a third shirt. Not as the only collar in the drawer.
