Five minutes, then stop
Sunscreen Under Makeup
SPF first, wait, then makeup. Tinted SPF can be the base. More foundation is not more sun.

Quantity is the fight
Foundation SPF 20 applied in a sheer veil is not SPF 20. Sunscreen applied in a veil is not the labelled number either. Two fingers of a real sunscreen, then a thin makeup layer. Or a tinted sunscreen at the two-finger dose and almost no foundation.
Waiting a minute stops pilling. Pilling is often still-wet SPF plus silicone primer plus impatient foundation.
Reapply without destroying the face
Outdoor days: powder SPF is a weak top-up; a stick or a mist made as sunscreen is better; a full cream reapply after lunch is honest if you can wash or blot first. Desk days: the morning layer is the main event. Do not skip the morning layer because reapply is annoying.
- Wait 1–2 minutes after SPF
- Primer only where you actually shine
- Setting spray does not replace a second sun layer outdoors
Longevity is a different guide
If makeup slides, the problem may be a greasy SPF, not a missing primer. Try a drier hybrid or mineral. For all-day wear tricks, use the longevity guide after the sun is handled. Sun first.
Questions, answered
- Can I use moisturizer with SPF instead of sunscreen?
- Only if you apply sunscreen amounts of it. Most people apply moisturizer amounts. A dedicated SPF is clearer.
- Why does it pill?
- Too many silicones, still-wet layers, or a niacinamide serum that does not like that SPF. Simplify, wait, press not rub.
- Does powder SPF count?
- As a top-up, a little. As the only SPF, no.
