What the names mean in a shop
Titanium frames are often CP (commercially pure) or a labelled alloy. Beta-titanium is a titanium alloy (aluminium and vanadium in the common optical mix) that can be made springy — the ‘memory’ feel in temples. Flexon-style memory metals are often nickel-titanium (nitinol) and are a third thing; they are not a nickel-allergy product.
If the hangtag just says ‘titanium tone,’ it may be plated stainless. Ask for titanium as a material, not a colour.
Flex versus stiffness
CP titanium: light, corrosion-resistant, holds an adjustment, can feel less ‘alive.’ Beta: temples that yield and return, comfortable on and off, can fight a precise custom wrap because they want their original shape.

What still breaks
Welds, screws, and pad arms. Titanium does not make a $8 nylon lens immortal. Combine with decent pads and a case. If you want colour, an acetate front with titanium temples is a common hybrid and a good one.
Questions, answered
- Is titanium always nickel-free?
- The metal itself, usually. Screws, plating, and pad cores may not be. Ask, and use silicone pads.
- Which is lighter?
- Both are light. Beta can be built thinner in temples. You will notice it against acetate, not against each other.
- Can I heat-adjust titanium at home?
- Do not. Metal pad arms, yes, gently. The front belongs with an optician.
